This program from September 7, 2022, features Louisiana Commissioner of Higher Education Dr. Kim Hunter Reed leading a panel discussion on teacher recruitment and retention in Louisiana. Prior to the panel discussion, there are introductions by Roland Mitchell, dean of the LSU College of Human Sciences and Education, and C.C Copeland, the president and CEO of Louisiana Public Broadcasting. The panelists are: Dr. Cade Brumley, the Louisiana Superintendent of Education; Kimberly Eckert, the dean of undergraduate studies at Reach University and innovation programs coordinator in West Baton Rouge Parish; Dr. Elecia Lathon, the assistant professor of professional practice at the LSU School of Education; Dr. VerJanis Peoples, the director of the Southern University School of Education; Dr. Candace Robillard, an English teacher at the LSU Lab School; and Renita Sherrard, the assistant principal at the Southern University Lab School. They discuss: the reasons for the teacher shortage crisis; the importance of encouraging the next generation to pursue a career in teaching; misconceptions about the profession; building community among teachers and professional development; teacher leadership; diversity; the role of lab schools as demonstrations schools; and ways the public can support education. Following the discussion, there are closing comments by Dr. Laura Choate, the interim director of the LSU School of Education, and Dean Mitchell.
