Description
This episode of the series “Education Update” from September 17, 1980, focuses on the new 1980-1981 school year. Robert Collins first reports on the latest education news, including the education bills passed at the 1980 Legislative Session, the latest opinions by the Attorney General’s office, and the latest action at the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE). Next, Neva Konecny leads a panel discussion with Dr. William Baker of the Louisiana Association of Educators (LAE), Dr. Jacqueline Lewis of the Louisiana Department of Education’s Bureau of Higher Education and Teacher Certification, and Emogene Pliner of the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana (PAR). They discuss: the work of LAE; the relationship between the Louisiana Department of Education and BESE; the Superintendent of Education as an elective position; the curriculum changes for aspiring teachers; and lowering the pupil-teacher ratio.
