This episode of the series “Education Update” from October 8, 1980, focuses on annual school reports and English as a Second Language (ESL). Roberts Collins first reports on the latest education news, including an interview with Dr. Jacqueline Lewis, the director of teacher certification for the Louisiana Department of Education, on new ESL requirements for teachers. Next, Neva Konecny leads a panel discussion with Ralph Whitehead, the assistant director of the Bureau of Secondary Education, Diane Reynolds, the assistant director of the Bureau of Elementary Education, and Millie Fails of Special Education Services. They discuss the importance of the annual school reports submitted to the Louisiana Department of Education. Lastly, Rick Smith reports on the New Orleans Public Schools’ ESL program.
