This episode of the series “Folks” from January 16, 1983, focuses on unemployment in Louisiana. Rob Hinton first reports on the 10.7% unemployment rate in Louisiana and the 13% unemployment rate for minorities in the state. His report includes highlights of Victor Bussie of the Louisiana AFL-CIO speaking to the Baton Rouge Press Club and interviews with people outside of an unemployment office. Genevieve Stewart then reports on people who are unemployed, but do not qualify for government assistance. She interviews Ronald Jefferson, Rooten Broomfield, and Mary Broomfield. Lastly, Hinton and Stewart conduct an in-studio interview with Lowry Lacy of the Louisiana Department of Labor and State Representative Richard Turnley, the chairman of the Legislative Black Caucus. They discuss: the demographics of the unemployed in Louisiana; the efforts to bring new industries to the state; President Ronald Reagan’s proposal to cut $1.4 billion from the food stamp and child nutrition programs; and the available job training programs for minorities.
