This episode of the series “Folks” from February 26, 1984, features profiles of two of the most important figures of the Civil Rights Movement in Louisiana. Rob Hinton first reports on the legacy of A.P. Tureaud (1899-1972), who served as the lead civil rights attorney for the New Orleans chapter of the NAACP. Hinton interviews Dr. Barbara Worthy of Southern University in New Orleans, who discusses Tureaud’s life and role in desegregating educational and public institutions in New Orleans and Louisiana. Genevieve Stewart then reports on the legacy of Emmitt Douglas (1926-1981), who served as the president of the Louisiana NAACP from 1966-1981. She interviews Harvey Britton, a former field director for the Louisiana NAACP, and Dr. Dupuy Anderson, his friend. Her report also includes an archival interview with Governor Edwin Edwards.
