This episode of the series “Folks” from November 23, 1986, features the second part of Sonya Masingale’s report on the shortage of black single men. This part of her report focuses on the male point-of-view. She first interviews students on the campus of Southern University and people at Derringer’s Tavern, a singles bar in Baton Rouge. They discuss what they look for in a partner. Masingale then conducts an in-studio interview with three single professional men: Will Johnson III, a sales representative for Liggett and Myers Tobacco Company; Ron Abernathy, the associate head basketball coach at LSU; and Chuck Siler, the program coordinator for the Louisiana Division of Black Culture. They discuss: the surplus of single black women; what they look for in a woman; their feelings on professional women; where single women can meet single men; and their complaints about the women they have dated in the past.
