Description
This episode of the series “Folks” from November 20, 1988, features Sonya Masingale’s report on the impact of beauty pageants on women. She interviews Phyllis Rideau, a student at Southern University and contestant in the upcoming Bayou Classic Beauty Pageant, and Germaine Tarver, a pageant consultant. Masingale also conducts an in-studio interview with Roderic Bruner, a pageant coordinator, Jackie DeHon, a writer and women’s advocate, and Dr. Doreen Miller, a psychological counselor. They discuss: their views of the positive and negative aspects of beauty pageants; the subliminal messages related to beauty standards and self-esteem; their concerns about the bathing suit competition; the issue of body image; children’s beauty pageants; and the unique experiences that beauty pageant competitions offer to the contestants.
