This episode of the series “Folks” from November 19, 1989, features the third part of Sonya Masingale’s report on the New Black Agenda. She presents highlights from “The Continuing Dilemma: A National Civil Rights Conference” sponsored by the Amistad Research Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, including speeches by: Juliane Malveaux, an economist and syndicated columnist; Walter Fauntroy, the delegate for Washington, D.C. in the United States House of Representatives; and Ron Brown, the chairman of the Democratic National Convention. She also interviews Malveaux, who discusses the need for the black community to reach full economic citizenship. Masingale also conducts an in-studio interview with Karen Smith, a school social worker for child welfare and attendance with the East Baton Rouge Parish School System. She discusses: the work of her office; her view of the “I Can’t” philosophy in the black community and its impact on parenting styles; her parenting tips for black families; the importance of parental involvement in schools; and her tips for keeping black students engaged in school.
