Description

Beth George hosts live coverage of Governor Edwin Edwards’ opening address to the 1979 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature on April 16, 1979. In his speech, Governor Edwards discusses: his state budget proposal; teacher pay raises; state employee pay raises; a $50 tax credits for parents with students in public and parochial schools; the creation of a litter and recycling commission; an environmental reorganization bill; increasing revenue sharing with local governments; multi-parish banking; the equal rights amendment (ERA); sex education; and prohibiting public employee strikes and creating a state arbitration board. Following the speech, Ron Blome interviews State Representative Manny Fernandez, who discusses his reaction to the speech.
