Description
Beth George hosts live coverage of Governor Dave Treen’s opening address to the 1983 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature on April 18, 1983. Prior to the speech, George and capitol correspondent David Young report on the resignation of Michael O’Keefe as Senate President and the election of Sammy Nunez as the new Senate President. They also preview the major issues of the session. During his speech, Governor Treen discusses his legislative proposals, including the state budget, the creation of a separate Department of Environmental Quality, the merging of the Department of Public Safety and the Department of Corrections, a prohibition on the disposal of hazardous wastes from foreign countries, and a drug racketeering act. Governor Treen also outlines his administration’s accomplishments in the areas of education, social services, the environment, law enforcement, and economic development.
