Description

Robin Hinton hosts live coverage of Governor Edwin Edwards’ opening address to the 1986 Special Session of the Louisiana Legislature on December 4, 1986. Prior to the speech, Hinton presents a background report on the estimated $250 million to $300 million budget deficit that will be addressed during the session. During his speech, Governor Edwards offers his proposals for dealing with the budget shortfall, including a temporary suspension of one additional cent on the sales tax exemption, corporate income taxes, and a reduction in the gasohol fund. He also speaks in favor of creating a statewide lottery, addresses the possibility of selling state airplanes, refutes claims that there are more state employees, and discusses his intention to run for re-election in 1987.
