Description
This episode of the series “Gumbo Island” from October 14, 1996, features host Britt Henderson traveling around the state to learn more about Louisiana’s history and culture. She first visits Oakley Plantation at the Audubon State Historic Site in St. Francisville, Louisiana, where the “ghost” of naturalist artist John James Audubon gives her a tour of the house he stayed in during the summer of 1821. Britt also visits Baton Rouge, Louisiana to see the rehearsals of the Louisiana Youth Orchestra under the direction of conductor James Byo. She talks to violinist Mary Charmichael about the importance of practice in giving her the confidence to perform in the orchestra. Conductor Timothy Bergman also leads the orchestra in a demonstration of the four families of instruments – strings, percussion, woodwinds, and brass.
