From the training of armored divisions for World War II to the training of soldiers for combat in contemporary urban settings, Louisiana has played an integral part in America's military history. The state's military bases have also been a major economic force to the state's economy. This new 30-minute program highlights the Fort Polk Army Base in Leesville, Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport; the Marine Forces Reserve National Headquarters in New Orleans, the Naval Reserve Force in New Orleans, the U.S. Coast Guard in New Orleans, and the Louisiana National Guard in Headquarters in New Orleans. Firms in the state enjoy significant infusions of cash from the purchase of supplies and services by these facilities and the combined number of people employed by them rivals those working on Louisiana farms, in the chemical industry and at Louisiana banks. Louisiana's history is steeped in military might and the health of its economic future is also tied to the continued presence of the military throughout the state.
