Description
This episode of the series “Louisiana’s Workforce in Crisis” from May 26, 1987, features Warren Bell leading a discussion between the panelists and audience members on the impact of unemployment on a family’s emotional and mental health. The panelists are Dr. Myron Mohr, the head of the Baton Rouge Crisis Intervention Center, and Dr. Donald Hoppe, the director of psychological services at Parkland Hospital in Baton Rouge. Prior to the discussion, Lynda Roedts profiles the Pierce Family, who recently moved to Baton Rouge from Lafayette. It includes interviews with: Chris Pierce, unemployed worker; Eddy Pierce, his wife; Jacob Pierce, his son; Morgan Pierce, his daughter; Dr. Horace Hines, a professor of sociology at LSU; and Virginia Budd, the president of the Louisiana Association of Educators. The panelists and audience members then discuss: the symptoms of stress; tips for managing stress; the impact of unemployment on children; and how unemployed workers can deal with feelings of anger and disappointment.
