Description

Beth Courtney hosts a remembrance of Governor Kathleen Blanco, who died on August 18, 2019, at age 76 following a battle with cancer. Blanco, a native of Iberia Parish and resident of Lafayette, served in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1984-1989, on the Louisiana Public Service Commission from 1989-1996, as Louisiana’s 50th Lieutenant Governor from 1996-2004, and as Louisiana’s 54th Governor from 2004-2008. The program touches on her early life and career, her impact on tourism as Lieutenant Governor, her historic election as Louisiana’s first female Governor, and her role in helping the state to recover from Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. It includes interviews with: Raymond “Coach” Blanco, her husband; Ceci Neustrom, her friend; Robert Mann, her former communications director; T. Joe Savoie, the president of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette; and Kim Hunter Reed, her former deputy chief of staff. It also includes highlights of Governor Blanco’s 2015 Louisiana Legends interview.
