This episode of the series “Louisiana Legends” from March 8, 2011, features an interview with Skip Bertman conducted by Beth Courtney. Bertman served as the head coach of the LSU baseball team from 1984-2001 and led the team to five national championships in 1991, 1993, 1996, 1997, and 2000. He also served as the LSU Athletic Director from 2001-2008. He discusses: the differences between his childhood in Miami and his life in Baton Rouge; his desire to coach since age 14; the baseball program at LSU and its players; motivational speaking; winning his first national championship; the experience of coaching the United States Olympic Team; his transition from coach to athletic director; why the state’s expectations for excellence does not apply to academics in the same way it does for athletics; the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina; the joy of bringing the team together; and his plans for his retirement.
