This program features the virtual award ceremony for the 15th Annual Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence on January 25, 2022. It begins with past winners of the award congratulating the latest winner, including: Victor Lavelle; Geronimo Johnson; Gabriel Bump; Mitchell Jackson; and Ravi Howard. The ceremony includes comments by: John Davies of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation; Dianne Gaines, the widow of Ernest Gaines; Mary Ann Sternberg, author; and Nathan Harris, the 2021 winner. Tony Grooms, an author and award judge, then interviews Harris, who discusses his award-winning novel, “The Sweetness of Water.” Lastly, the award judges congratulate Harris, including Elizabeth Nunez, Francine Prose, and Patricia Towers.
