Description

Natasha Williams of Louisiana Public Broadcasting and Fred Kalmbach of The Advocate moderate a live debate from the LPB Studios in Baton Rouge on September 29, 2020, between the top six candidates for East Baton Rouge Mayor-President: Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome (D), the incumbent; former State Representative Steve Carter (R); businessman Jordan Piazza (R); attorney E. Eric Guirard (I); State Representative C. Denise Marcelle (D); and Metro Councilman Matt Watson (R). During the first round, Terry Jones of The Advocate and Andre Moreau of LPB ask the candidates questions on the following topics: changing policing in Baton Rouge; the city-parish’s lawsuit against the incorporation of the City of St. George; the city-parish’s response to COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic; and the Metro Council’s decision to reject a $5 million settlement for the family of Alton Sterling. During the second round, Jones and Moreau ask each candidate a question on a wide variety of topics, including: economic development; law enforcement; rededicating taxes; flood prevention; renaming streets named after Confederate generals; traffic; bridging the racial divide; the fairness ordinance; and education. During the third round, Jones and Moreau ask a series of lightning round questions to each candidate. The debate ends with each candidate discussing why people should vote for them.
