A speech by Dominique Ricks before the Baton Rouge Rotary Club on April 8, 2015. Ricks is a playwright, poet, and a 7th grade English teacher in Iberville Parish. He discusses: his experience as a student in the Louisiana public school system; his participation as a student with the Baton Rouge Youth Coalition (BRYC); the successes of BRYC; his decision to join Teach for America after college; the need to increase access to human resources and career preparation for students; receiving the First Wave Full-Ride Scholarship and attending the University of Wisconsin at Madison; his current role as a 7th grade English teacher; and his hopes to attend law school and influence policy in the future.
