This special episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from April 20, 2005, features Barry Erwin and Karen Henderson moderating a town hall meeting between high school students and the panelists on redesigning Louisiana’s high schools. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Catherine Davis, a retired teacher and member of the Louisiana High School Redesign Commission; John Nixon, student; Pauline Fleming, a retired teacher and commission member; State Superintendent of Education Cecil Picard; and Virginia Governor Mark Warner, the chairman of the National Governors Association. A panel of experts first joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Governor Kathleen Blanco; Dan Juneau, the president of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI); Dr. Joseph Savoie, the Commissioner of Higher Education; and Linda Johnson, the chairwoman of the Louisiana High School Redesign Commission. They discuss: drugs and violence in schools; dual enrollment programs with technical and vocational schools; the school funding formula; job shadowing programs; the Jobs for America’s Graduates program; and lowering the high school dropout rate. The audience members then share their ideas on redesigning Louisiana’s high schools. Hosts: Beth Courtney, Barry Erwin, and Karen Henderson
