This special episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from October 24, 2007, features the highlights from the Deliberation Day discussions held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as a part of the PBS “By the People” initiative. Hosts Beth Courtney and Craig Freeman first present a background report put together by MacNeil/Lehrer Productions on the health care challenges in the United States. Freeman then leads a discussion between the Deliberation Day participants. They discuss: the rising cost of health care, the uninsured population, universal health care funded by the government, the health care system in Canada, and the level of care in Louisiana’s charity hospital system. Freeman then moderates a discussion between the audience members and a panel of experts. The panelists are: Dr. Fred Cerise, director at the LSU Health Care Services Division; David Hood, Public Affairs Research Council (PAR); Barry Erwin, Council for A Better Louisiana (CABL); and Rozane A, Townsend, Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals. They discuss: the high cost of health care; possible alternatives to funding the nation’s health care delivery system; the importance of preventive care; holding the government accountable for allocating funds into medical care; and developing more public-private partnerships. This program was preserved through a 2022-2023 Public Broadcasting Preservation Fellowship.
