Description
This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from February 24, 2010, features a discussion between the panelists and audience members on Louisiana’s application for a federal “Race to the Top” grant to encourage education reform. The panelists are: Walter Lee, BESE Board Member and DeSoto Parish School Board Superintendent; Joyce Haynes, President of the Louisiana Association of Educators; Andy Kopplin, Senior Advisor to the CEO of Teach for America; and Nolton Senegal, Sr., Executive Director of the Louisiana School Boards Association. They discussed: their support or disapproval of the “Race to the Top” program; the possibility of losing local control of the school systems to the federal government; how long the grant money will last; how the money will be distributed in the state; concerns over the grant stipulations related to teacher evaluations and pay raises; and the reforms needed in Louisiana public schools.
