Description
This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from March 24, 2010, features a discussion between the panelists and audience members on higher education reform, including the implementation of the recommendations made by the Louisiana Postsecondary Education Review Commission (PERC). The panelists are: Speaker of the House Jim Tucker; Dr. Sally Clausen, Commissioner of Higher Education; State Senator Ben Nevers, Chairman of the Senate Education Committee; Jennifer Pike, Research Director at the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana (PAR); and Tony Clayton, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors for the Southern University System. They discussed: who should pay for higher education; reforming the TOPS program; implementing best practices across the system; how to improve the system despite budget cuts; the importance of early childhood education and the K-12 system in preparing students for college; the success of online classes; improving graduation rates through tougher admission standards and increased enrollment at community and technical colleges; encouraging more minority participation in higher education; and the feasibility of implementing the PERC recommendations.Host: Beth CourtneyHost: Craig Freeman
