This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from October 27, 2010, features Shauna Sanford leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on immigration reform. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: State Representative Joe Harrison; Kathleen Gasparian, immigration attorney; Audrey Singer of the Brookings Institution; Elizabeth Liuzza of Liuzza Produce Farms in Independence, Louisiana; and Lucas Diaz, the executive director of Puentes New Orleans. The audience members then discuss Arizona’s controversial immigration law, illegal immigration and racial profiling. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Kathleen Gasparian, immigration attorney; State Senator Neil Riser, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Labor and Industrial Relations; and Dr. Susan Weisher, a migration specialist with the Jesuit Social Research Institute at Loyola University in New Orleans. They discuss: illegal immigration in Louisiana; the need for comprehensive immigration reform at the federal level; border security; the e-verify system for employment; the penalties for employers who knowingly hire undocumented workers; and immigration law and crime.
