Description
This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from December 22, 2010, features Kirby Goidel leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on the challenges facing Louisiana nonprofit organizations during the economic downturn. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Ross Gamble, a volunteer at the National World War II Museum; Dr. Gordon Mueller, the president of the World War II Museum; Jennifer Eplett Reilly, the co-founder of City Year Louisiana; Ashley Kovach, a City Year volunteer; Kellie Chavez Greene of the Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations (LANO); Edward Ashworth of the Louisiana Budget Project; and Barry Meyer, the executive director of The Arc Baton Rouge. The audience members then discuss: their ability to give; the greater need in the community; the importance of giving back to your community; volunteering your time; and the relationship between government and nonprofits in providing services. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Derek Gordon, president of the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge; Ann Silverberg Williamson, the president and CEO of LANO; State Senator Dan Claitor; and Katherine Martin, the executive director of the O’Brien House. They discuss: the relationship between government and nonprofits; the difficulty in raising money during the current economic recession; the accountability of nonprofits; the money given by state government to nonprofits; and the importance of collaboration among nonprofits.
