This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from May 27, 2015, features Robert Travis Scott leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on the state of research and development at Louisiana colleges and universities. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Dr. Mandi Lopez of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine; Dr. Terrence Chambers of the Cleco Alternative Energy Center at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL); Camille Conaway of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI); Dr. Ramesh Kolluru, the vice president for research at ULL; Dr. F. King Alexander, the president and chancellor at LSU; and Dr. K.T. Valsaraj, the vice chancellor of research at LSU. The audience members then discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the research and development programs at the state’s colleges and universities. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Dr. Richard Kordal, the director of the Office of Intellectual Property and Commercialization at Louisiana Tech University; Quentin Messer, the assistant secretary of the Louisiana Department of Economic Development; Dr. Richard Koubek, the dean of the LSU College of Engineering; and Dr. David Winwood, the chief business development officer at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge. They discuss: how research and development is changing in Louisiana; connecting businesses and universities; the need for stable funding; the changes in technology transfer and commercialization; promoting innovation within colleges and universities; the areas of research that Louisiana should focus on; the lack of research and development at Louisiana businesses; and the impact of possible state budget cuts to research and development programs.
