Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from May 25, 2016, features Bob Mann leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on the challenges facing post-9/11 Louisiana veterans as they transition back to civilian life. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. The audience members, including veterans, discuss the challenges facing veterans and the work of several military support organizations from around the state. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Assistant Secretary Al Leger of the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs; Captain Angela Huval, a behavioral health officer with the Louisiana National Guard; Colonel David “Gregg” Athey, the Garrison Commander at Fort Polk; and James Hou, the Louisiana employment coordinator with the U.S. Department of Defense’s Hero2Hired program. They discuss: transitioning challenges; the military-civilian divide; the need to connect military personnel with the available resources before the transition; employment issues; self-employment opportunities, including agriculture; the organizations bridging the military-civilian divide; the importance of peer support; the unique challenges facing women veterans; connecting veterans with support organizations; and dealing with benefit claims. Hosts: Beth Courtney and Bob Mann
