Description
This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from February 27, 2019, features Andre Moreau leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on ways to lift the state’s working poor out of poverty. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: Grace Bailey, a working single mother; Jan Moller of the Louisiana Budget Project; Renee Amar of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI); and Barry Erwin of the Council for a Better Louisiana (CABL). The audience members then discuss possible solutions for helping the working poor in Louisiana. A panel of experts then joins the audience members to answer their questions. The panelists are: State Senator Troy Carter, the vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Labor and Industrial Relations; Dawn Starns, the state director for the National Federation of Independent Business; Secretary Ava Dejoie of the Louisiana Workforce Commission; and Dr. Monty Sullivan, the president of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System. They discuss: the value of apprenticeship programs; the cost of attending community colleges and technical colleges; the barriers to increasing the minimum wage in Louisiana; the need for more skilled workers in the state; the state’s business climate; and the importance of job training programs.
