This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from December 23, 2020, features Marvin McGraw leading a discussion with panelists on children’s health in Louisiana. The first segment focuses on prenatal care. The panelists are Dr. Terrie Thomas of Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge and Dr. Lauren Bailey of Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health in Lafayette. They discuss: the high death rate among pregnant women in Louisiana due to homicide; the benefits of prenatal care; the foods to avoid during pregnancy; the supplements pregnant women should take; the benefits of waiting until 39 weeks to deliver babies; the high rate of low birth weight babies born in Louisiana; and the symptoms to watch out for in infants. The second segment focuses on children’s health and wellness and includes an interview with Teresa Falgout of the Agenda for Children. The panelists are Dr. Katie Queen, a pediatrician at Our Lady of the Angels Hospital in Bogalusa, and Dr. Chelsea Kracht, a researcher at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge. They discuss: childhood nutrition; the benefits of eating together as a family; childhood exercise recommendations; alternatives to sugar-sweetened beverages; their research into childhood obesity; limiting screen time; the transition from formula to baby food; and the importance of vaccinations. The third segment focuses on keeping children safe and includes an interview with Rene Guilbeau of Children’s Hospital in New Orleans. The panelists are Dr. Jamar Melton of the Baton Rouge Clinic and Alisa Stevens of the Southwest Louisiana Center for Health Services. They discuss: infant sleep safety; the risk factors for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS); preventing accidental drownings; keeping children away from guns; and the proper use of child safety seats. The fourth and final segment focuses on mental health and includes an interview with Teresa Falgout of the Agenda for Children. The panelists are Dr. Anna Long, a licensed psychologist with the LSU Department of Psychology, and Dr. Gigi Dunn, a physician educator. They discuss: stress responses in children; traumatic stress responses; when to seek professional help for your child; stress reduction tools; the importance of parents dealing with their own stress; and teaching young children how to deal with stress.
