This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from April 28, 2021, features Andre Moreau leading a discussion with panelists on the mishandling of sexual assault cases by Louisiana colleges and universities through their Title IX offices. The first segment focuses on the student perspective on the Title IX system at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge. It includes an interview with Caroline Schroeder, an LSU graduate, sharing her experience of dealing with the Title IX office. The panelists are: Elisabeth Adries, LSU senior; Ricky Bryant, LSU junior; Calise Richardson, former LSU student; and Angelina Cantelli, the co-president of Tigers Against Sexual Assault. They discuss: their experiences with reporting their sexual assaults to the Title IX office; the barriers faced by students in reporting their cases; their recommendations for improving the reporting process; and the university’s role in preventing sexual assaults. The second segment focuses on how administrators and legislators plan to improve the Title IX system to protect students moving forward. It includes an interview with Tania Tetlow, the president of Loyola University in New Orleans. The panelists are: Thomas Galligan, interim LSU president; Dr. Jim Henderson, the president of the University of Louisiana System; Morgan Lamandre, the legal director for STAR (Sexual Trauma Awareness and Response); State Senator Regina Barrow, the chairwoman of the Senate Select Committee on Women; and State Senator Beth Mizell, the Senate President Pro Tempore. They discuss: the changes made at LSU following the Husch Blackwell investigation into the mishandling of Title IX on campus; the policy changes made by the University of Louisiana System; the work of the Senate Select Committee on Women; the proposed legislation to improve the handling of sexual assault cases on college campuses; and how colleges and universities can prevent sexual assaults.
