This segment from the October 6, 1978, episode of “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features a special report on the cholera outbreak in Vermilion Parish and the determination that crabs were the source of the bacteria. This report includes: the testing of crabs by the Center for Disease Control (CDC); the testing of sewage treatment plants in Lafayette; the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) closing of crabbing off of a 50-mile portion of the Louisiana coast; the FDA ban on the interstate shipment of crabs from this area; Dr. William Cherry’s view that the FDA is overreacting; and the effect of the outbreak on the seafood markets in the state.
