These issues include: record spending in the state budget and capital outlay bill; the debate over using state funding to pay for court-ordered busing in school desegregation plans; allowing the teaching of creationism in equal time with the theory of evolution in public schools; the Professional Improvement Program (PIPS) for teachers; removing the members of the Louisiana Racing Commission for failing to expose widespread corruption in the horse racing industry; and the expulsion of State Senator Gaston Gerald, who is serving a five year sentence in federal prison for attempted extortion.
