Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from January 1, 1982, features Ron Blome leading a panel discussion with three capitol reporters: Beth George of Louisiana Public Broadcasting; John Hill of Gannett News Service; and Joan Duffy of United Press International.  They discuss the major stories of 1981, including: Governor Dave Treen and his difficulty in publicizing his successes; the relationship between Treen and the Legislature; the intrigue of listening to the secret recordings of politicians during the Brilab trial; the effect of former Commissioner of Administration Charles Roemer’s conviction in the Brilab trial on Edwin Edwards’ 1983 gubernatorial campaign; the settlement reached in the higher education desegregation lawsuit; the possibility of the deregulation of natural gas; and the difficulty in cleaning up abandoned hazardous waste sites around the state.
