Description
This segment from the June 10, 1983, episode of “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features David Young’s report on the fate of Louisiana’s 1984 presidential primary. Young reports that the Legislature has already passed a resolution at the 1983 Regular Session to suspend the primary at the request of Governor Dave Treen in order to save the $1.5 million required to hold the election. Young interviews: Secretary of State Jim Brown on his alternative proposal to hold the primary along with the 1983 statewide elections in November; State Representative Jim Donelon on his efforts to convince Governor Treen of the political importance of holding the primary; and State Representative Jimmy Dimos on his belief that the primary is a waste of money. Young reports that Governor Treen released a statement saying that he will make every effort to find the funds necessary to hold the presidential primary in April 1984.
