This segment from the October 12, 1984, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Robyn Ekings’ visit to Jefferson Island in Iberia Parish, four years after an oil drilling rig punched a hole in a salt dome beneath Lake Peigneur and nearly destroyed the island. Ekings interviews J. Lyles Bayless, Jr., a Jefferson Island resident who lost his home and an imported conservatory of exotic plants and flowers to the disaster. He discusses his memories of the disaster and his efforts to rebuild the Live Oak Garden. Host: Beth Courtney
