This segment from the October 16, 1987, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Rob Hinton reporting on the 1987 gubernatorial election between Secretary of State Jim Brown, Governor Edwin Edwards, Congressman Bob Livingston, Congressman Buddy Roemer, and Congressman Billy Tauzin. Hinton first presents highlights from a forum at the Baton Rouge Press Club of Brown, Roemer, and Tauzin discussing the candidates they will support in the run-off election if they do not make it. Next, he presents highlights of Brown’s campaign stops in Port Allen and St. Gabriel, including an introduction by jazz trumpeter Al Hirt. Hinton then presents highlights from the final televised debate at Loyola University in New Orleans featuring comments from all five candidates. Lastly, Hinton interviews Gus Weill, political consultant, who discusses the role of television in the campaign, including the political ads and the televised debates.
