This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from June 9, 1989, features Charles Zewe and Karen Nachman reporting on the eighth week of the 1989 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Zewe first reports on the week’s headlines, including: interviews with Corey Grant and Wilson Fields of Young Adults for Positive Action on their support for the bill creating drug free zones at schools; the passage of a bill changing the election rules for state district judges; and State Senators Ken Hollis and Sydney Nelson debate Hollis’ bill creating a statewide lottery. Next, Nachman reports on the House passing a compromise state budget and an extension of the two cent state sales tax. Her report includes: Dan Juneau of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI) testifying on the sales tax bill; State Representatives John Alario and Charles Lancaster debating the sales tax bill in the House Ways and Means Committee; and State Representative Robert Adley, the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, presenting the state budget on the House floor. She also interviews: State Representative Kip Holden; State Senator Larry Bankston; State Representative Al Ater; State Representative Bruce Bolin; and State Representative Allen Bradley. Lastly, Zewe conducts an in-studio interview with State Representative Ron Gomez and State Representative John Alario. They discuss: the House passing a balanced state budget; the long-term solutions for tax reform; and the possibility of a statewide lottery.
