Description
This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from July 21, 1989, features Charles Zewe and Karen Nachman reporting on the federal court approving a desegregation plan for Louisiana’s higher education system, including a single management board. Nachman first reports on the history of the college desegregation efforts in Louisiana, including the 1981 consent decree reached between the State of Louisiana and the United States Department of Justice. Her report includes interviews with former Governor Dave Treen and Sharon Beard, a staff member with the Board of Regents. Zewe then conducts an in-studio interview with: John Kennedy, special counsel to Governor Buddy Roemer; George Hardy, the vice chairman of the Board of Regents; and Dr. Mark Carleton, a history professor at LSU. They discuss the federal court’s desegregation plan and its implications for the state’s higher education system.
