This segment from the October 27, 1989, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features two reports on Louisiana’s war on drugs. First, Karen Nachman reports on the state’s efforts to educate Louisianans about the problems associated with drug abuse. Her report includes highlights of a visit by Judge Reggie Walton, the associate director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, to Baton Rouge to meet with state officials and students. She also interviews: State Senator Randy Ewing; C.J. Miller, student; State Senator Cleo Fields; Richard Thompson of the Louisiana Department of Education; Louisiana Attorney General William Guste; and Wilson Fields and Corey Grant of Young Adults for Positive Action. Jeff Duhe then reports on law enforcement’s efforts to stop drug smugglers off the coast and on the highway system. He interviews: Lieutenant John Philbin of the Eighth Coast Guard District; Ronnie Jones of the Louisiana State Police; William Fernandes of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA); and Julius Wilkerson, the organizer of drug free zones in New Orleans.
