This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from January 5, 1990, features a look back at the 1980s. First, Karen Nachman looks back at the major issues of the 1980s in the areas of the economy, politics, education, and the environment. Jeff Duhe then looks back at the major events of 1989. He interviews Dr. Wayne Parent, a political science professor at LSU, and Dr. Loren Scott, the chairman of the economics department at LSU. Lastly, Robert Collins conducts an in-studio interview with John Maginnis, the publisher of Gris Gris, and Barry Erwin of WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge. They discuss: the performances of Edwin Edwards, Buddy Roemer, and the Legislature in the 1980s; the possibility of changing the state’s open primary election system; J. Bennett Johnston’s reelection chances in the 1990 United States Senate election; and Governor Roemer’s reelection chances in the 1991 gubernatorial election.
