This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from June 28, 1991, features Robert Collins, Karen Nachman, and Jeff Duhe reporting on the eleventh week of the 1991 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Collins first reports on the week’s headlines. Duhe then reports on the passage of a bill suspending the Roemer Administration’s teacher evaluation program for one year. His report includes: an interview with Fred Skelton of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers; highlights of the House floor debate with State Representatives Jimmy Long, Joe Salter, and Steve Theriot; and interviews with Governor Buddy Roemer, State Senator Cecil Picard, and Linda Day of the Louisiana Association of Educators (LAE). Next, Nachman interviews State Senator J.E. Jumonville, State Representative John Alario, and State Representative Kip Holden. They discuss the major issues of the session, including: the veto override of the anti-abortion bill; the suspension of the teacher evaluation system; the legislation aimed at the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ); and the state budget. Lastly, Duhe reports on the session’s other headlines, including: State Representative Jimmy Long presenting a bill requiring the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) to regulate all schools that offer degrees; an interview with Morris Witten of Common Cause on the lack of a committee hearing for the lobbyist disclosure bill; State Senator Joe McPherson questioning Donald Mintz, the chair of the Louisiana Health Care Authority, on their expenditures; an interview with State Representative Sam Theriot on lifetime hunting and fishing licenses; and an interview with State Representative Peppi Bruneau on his gambling bills.
