This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from November 15, 1991, features Robert Collins, Karen Nachman, and Jeff Duhe reporting on the eve of the statewide runoff for the 1991 gubernatorial election between former Governor Edwin Edwards and State Representative David Duke. Nachman first reports on the concerns about the impact of the election of Duke on the tourism industry in New Orleans. She interviews: New Orleans Mayor Sidney Barthelemy; Michel Tourniaire, the manager of the Hotel Intercontinental; Dr. Mervin Trail of the New Orleans Tourism and Convention Commission; and Dave Dixon of Dixon and Dixon of Royal. Next, Duhe reports on the education policies of Duke and Edwards. He interviews: Emogene Pliner of the Public Affairs Research Council (PAR); David Duke; Edwin Edwards; and Claudia Fowler, Roemer education advisor. Nachman then reports on the environmental policies of Edwards and Duke. She interviews: Mary Lee Orr of the Louisiana Environmental Action Network; State Representative Kip Holden; and Dr. Paul Templet, the secretary of the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Lastly, Duhe reports on the last-minute campaigning of Duke and Edwards.
