Description
This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from November 29, 1991, features Robert Collins, Karen Nachman, and Jeff Duhe reporting on the future of education in Louisiana. Nachman first reports on the tenure of Dr. Wilmer Cody, the outgoing state superintendent of education, and his contentious relationship with the teachers’ unions. She interviews: Steve Monaghan of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers (LFT); Cynthia Camese, social worker; Jackie Ducote of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI); David Lovely of LFT; and Dr. Wilmer Cody. Next, Duhe reports on the education policies of Governor-Elect Edwin Edwards during his first three terms in office and his proposed policies during his recent gubernatorial campaign. He interviews: Emogene Pliner of the Public Affairs Research Council (PAR); Regina Patterson, teacher; Victor Bussie of the Louisiana AFL-CIO; Stanley Leger, vo-tech principal; Cosby Joiner of the state vo-tech council; and William “Bud” Davis, LSU Chancellor. Lastly, Collins conducts an in-studio interview with Linda Day, the president of the Louisiana Association of Educators (LAE), and Fred Skelton, the president of LFT. They discuss: their report cards for Governor Buddy Roemer and Dr. Wilmer Cody; their expectations for the new state superintendent of education; and the future of teacher evaluations.
