This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from May 22, 1992, features Robert Collins and Jeff Duhe reporting on the eighth week of the 1992 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Collins first reports on the week’s headlines. Duhe then reports on the latest action at the State Capitol, including: Susan McConnell of the Louisiana Restaurant Association, State Representative Arthur Morell, and State Representative Sherman Copelin testifying in a House Committee on a bill creating a casino in New Orleans; Governor Edwin Edwards testifying in favor of the casino gambling bill in a Senate committee; an interview with State Senator Jay Dardenne on a bill banning contracts between state officials and state agencies; an interview with David Snyder of the American Insurance Association on a no-fault automobile insurance bill; an interview with David Czernik, a health care lobbyist, on a bill creating a program to provide health insurance to those who cannot currently purchase health insurance due to preexisting conditions; an interview with State Representative Vic Stelly on his opposition to a bill rolling back the starting date for the Louisiana Health Insurance Guaranty Fund; State Representative Warren Triche testifying on his bill confiscating license plates if a driver has no proof of insurance; an interview with State Senator Jon Johnson on a bill restricting smoking in state buildings; an interview with legal lobbyist Susan Clade on a hate crimes bill; an interview with Fred Skelton of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers on their support of a bill prohibiting school boards from lowering teachers’ salaries during the school year; and State Representative Quentin Dastugue questioning Grand Isle Mayor Andy Valence on a bill creating a new levee district in Grand Isle.
