This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from October 16, 1992, features Robert Collins, Jeff Duhe, and Arcie Chapa reporting on the Native American tribes in Louisiana. Duhe first reports on the Coushatta Tribe’s plan to operate a casino in Elton. He interviews: Loveland Poncho, chief of the Coushatta Tribe; Walter Grandy, area economic coordinator; Paul Ruppert, tribal administrator; Burly Sylestine, tribal council member; Beverly Poncho, tribal council member; and Kevin Kean of Grand Casinos, Inc. Next, Chapa visits Dulac and reports on the efforts of the Houmas Tribe to gain federal recognition. She interviews Kirby Verrett, the former chairman of the tribe. Lastly, Duhe presents an essay on non-native people’s perceptions about Indian culture and how little we know about the first Louisianans. He visits the Museum of Missionaries and Indians and a powwow in Lafayette. He also interviews: Robert Neuman, a professor of archaeology; Larry Richard, museum curator; Snowfawn; Inauquin Lonewhiteagle; and David Eveningthunder, artist.
