This segment from the February 19, 1993, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Arcie Chapa’s report on the history of school desegregation in Louisiana since the United States State Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education in 1954. Her report includes archival footage of debates in the Louisiana Legislature, interviews with Governors Jimmie Davis and John McKeithen, the integration of the New Orleans Public Schools in 1960; and an interview with United States Attorney General Robert Kennedy. She also interviews: Cecil Taylor, the dean of the LSU College of Arts and Sciences; Kwaku Kushindana; Annabelle Armstrong; Robert Meador, the president of the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board; Nanny Kinchen, the principal at Highland Elementary School in Baton Rouge; and Jean Kuecher, the PTA president at Highland Elementary.
