This segment from the May 6, 1994, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Jeff Duhe’s report on a proposal at the 1994 Fiscal Session of the Louisiana Legislature to create a $10 million fund for the state’s public defender system. Duhe first reports on the problems facing the state’s public defender system due to a lack of state funding. He interviews: Sam Dalton, attorney; Clive Stafford-Smith, attorney and founder of Pro Bono Clinics; and Rick Tessier, public defender. Duhe then presents highlights of State Representative Hunt Downer speaking against the fund on the House floor. Lastly, Duhe interviews Chief Justice Pascal Calogero of the Louisiana Supreme Court, who discusses the need for more funding for the public defender system. Host: Robert Collins
