This segment from the June 24, 1994, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features the first part of Arcie Chapa’s report on the economic troubles and high poverty rate in the Lower Mississippi Delta region of Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi. She interviews Robbie Gipson and Curtis Thompson of Lake Providence, Louisiana. Her report also includes highlights of a recent town hall meeting sponsored by the Delta Economic Energy District in Greenville, Mississippi, including comments by Dwight Pate, pastor of Church Point Ministries. Robert Collins then conducts an in-studio interview with State Senator Charles D. Jones, who discusses the Rural Empowerment Zone application submitted to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to help bring economic development to the tri-state delta region.
