This segment from the May 19, 1995, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Jeff Duhe reporting on the action at the eighth week of the 1995 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Duhe reports that the House voted to put the state’s Charity Hospital System under the management of the LSU Medical Center and plans to would use the state funding already allocated to the LSU Medical Center to draw down federal matching funds through the Medicaid program. His report includes: State Representatives Sean Reilly and Bo Ackal discussing the plan on the House floor; a press conference with Governor Edwin Edwards discussing his disagreement with moving away from the Medicaid HMO proposal; and an interview with Marcus Carson of the Louisiana Health Care Campaign. Host Robert Collins then conducts an in-studio interview with Steve Winham, state budget director, and John Rombach, legislative fiscal officer. They discuss: the plan passed by the House; the likelihood that the federal government will approve the plan; and the possible budget cuts that will be needed if the federal government does not approve the plan.
