Description
This segment from the September 16, 2005, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Robyn Ekings’ report on the plans for rebuilding New Orleans following the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. It includes highlights from President George W. Bush’s national address from Jackson Square in New Orleans, where he discusses his commitment to rebuilding New Orleans and the federal aid available to evacuees. This report also includes highlights from Governor Kathleen Blanco’s speech to a joint session of the Louisiana Legislature, where she addresses the failure of the government response at every level and her rebuilding plan. Ekings also interviews Lieutenant Governor Mitch Landrieu and State Senator Ann Duplessis of New Orleans about their reactions to Governor Blanco’s speech. Lastly, she talks to Commissioner of Administration Jerry Luke LeBlanc and New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin about the potential impact of Hurricane Katrina on the state budget.
